Thomas Clarkson and other abolitionists formed the Anti-Slavery Society on April 17, 1839 to campaign against slavery worldwide. The organization was founded following the first successful antislavery convention in London. That campaign promoted alternatives to slave plantations, pushed for the end of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and demanded the abolition of the indentured labor system in the British colonies. It played a pivotal role in ending the activities of the Peruvian Amazon Company, which was using indigenous slave labor in rubber production.
"As long as slavery still exists, we will continue to support and empower people vulnerable to slavery so they can stand up for themselves and take control of their own lives."
